Transforming a dull courtyard into a calm, plant-filled retreat with layered foliage and space-saving vertical features.
Full Garden Makeover
The Brief
To create a stylish, low-maintenance outdoor room that offered privacy and a break from the surrounding urban density. The client asked for a space that could be enjoyed both during the day and in the evening — perfect for solo relaxation, reading, or hosting friends. The challenge was to make the area feel larger and more inviting without overcrowding it or adding unnecessary maintenance demands.
Overview
This courtyard was once a bare concrete square with no personality or purpose. The client wanted to make better use of the limited space and soften the harshness of the walls and paving. By blending clever hardscaping with soft, shade-tolerant planting, we transformed it into a quiet retreat full of greenery, texture, and mood. Lighting, vertical planting, and layered foliage helped maximise visual interest while maintaining a feeling of openness and calm.
Research & Discovery
Form meets function in tight footprints.
We assessed sun exposure, neighbouring architecture, and existing drainage to choose the right materials and plants with compact root systems.
Solution
Raised beds were installed along the walls, using reclaimed sleepers for a rustic edge. Bamboo and climbing ivy softened the perimeter. Warm LED lighting was embedded into planters and seating for nighttime ambiance. We introduced lightweight, movable furniture for flexibility.
“The transformation is unbelievable — it’s my favourite space to unwind now.”
