a small plant in the middle of a field

A sleek, low-maintenance courtyard redesign with modern hardscaping and planters for compact urban homes.

Full Garden Makeover

The Brief

The client wanted a functional but stylish outdoor area that aligned with their minimalist interior. Space efficiency, clean lines, and easy upkeep were top priorities. They also requested integrated lighting for evening use and privacy screening from neighbours.

Overview

This small city courtyard lacked structure and purpose. Our goal was to transform the underused space into a modern sanctuary suited for relaxing, light entertaining, and low-effort gardening. Using a refined material palette and layered planters, we gave the space a contemporary look and improved usability in all seasons.

Research & Discovery

We conducted a survey of the front garden’s slope, sunlight direction, and current usage. The client required a low-upkeep design that still offered curb appeal. Research focused on drought-tolerant plants and permeable paving solutions that complied with local planning regulations and fit the home’s modern frontage.

Solution

We laid porcelain paving slabs in a geometric pattern and installed rendered raised beds with evergreen planting. Bespoke screening with slatted timber panels added privacy, and low-voltage lighting created a warm ambience after dark.

“This design makes the most of every square foot. It feels like an extra room of the house now — clean, modern, and calm.”
